In touch with the past, looking to the future
The Wiveliscombe Civic and Historical Society is a volunteer-run society working to celebrate our town's history, protect its built environment and bring the community together.
The Society was established in 1997 as a community venture. Today it remains volunteer-run and relies on income from membership fees, donations and admission charges for talks.
What we do
We hold an annual programme of talks and social events, plus visits to locations of interest in the area. These are held monthly and everyone is welcome. See the Wivey Talks programme for what's coming up.
We look at planning applications which come before the Town Council and comment on matters of relevance in the area of architecture and conservation. Current applications we are following are listed under Community Matters.
The Society is a founder member of the Wiveliscombe Area Partnership (WAP), formed in January 2000 jointly with the Town Council and the Area Business Group to further the economic and social future of the town. WAP runs the Community Office in The Square and manages the highly successful community transport scheme, Wivey Link.
How the Society works
The Society holds a brief Annual General Meeting in September or October each year, where all members present elect the Officers and a Committee. The Committee meets regularly throughout the year to carry out the Society's objectives.
